On Translations

The following transcript was recorded via Zoom and edited for length and clarity with the knowledge and participation of the panelists. For months, the Guild’s Business Affairs team has been revisiting our standard model agreements for both translations and adaptations, so we welcomed Jessica Lit (Director of Business Affairs) into this discussion. We are grateful to Caridad, Jeremy, and Migdalia for their participation, insight, and candor as we continue working on our model agreements. Caridad Svich:  A new translation is like a new play. Just like a new play, the translation needs time to develop. Translation is both an art and a craft, which may not seem revolutionary to say, but these days sometimes that feels revolutionary. Let’s start there in terms of respectful processes you’ve had with bringing new work into the world across theatrical cultures and linguistic cultures, especially in development situations, and also in production.

received the 2023 Flora Roberts Award, the Premio LATA for Special Achievement in Theatrical Adaptation, and the 2012 Obie for Lifetime Achievement. She is an inductee into the 2023 class of the College of Fellows of American Theatre. Published works include JARMAN (all this maddening beauty) and other plays (Intellect UK, 2016) and Toward a Future Theatre (Methuen Drama, 2022).
