Barrington Stage’s world premiere production of A Crossing: A Dance Musical, by DG members Mark St. Germain and Zoe Sarnak, has received the 2021 Sally and Robert Sugarman Award for a World Premiere of a New Play or Musical. The award is given as part of the Berkshire Theatre Critics Association Awards, which promote and celebrate the quality and diversity of theatre in the region.
This year, the BTCA Awards, known colloquially as the Berkies, included eighty nominees in twenty-one categories which were culled from 381 votes of critics who covered productions at theatres in four states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and New York. The season included about 103 different productions at more than two dozen venues.
This year, the Board determined that the prize for Outstanding New Play would henceforth be called the “Sally and Robert Sugarman Award for the World Premiere of a New Work” to honor two founding board members; Sally Sugarman’s death in December 2020 inspired this change.
