The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage announced their 2020 grants in support of the Philadelphia region’s artists and cultural organizations for exceptional programs, events, and artistic work. Philadelphia Theatre Company received a grant to develop and produce The Tattooed Lady, a new musical by composer MAX VERNON and librettist Erin Courtney.

The musical foregrounds the bravery, artistry, and bodily autonomy of a group of women who embraced personal transformation through tattoos. Directed by Ellie Heyman, the work explores expressions of the self and a path through “otherness,” offering a historical survey of sideshow performers wedded to a fictional tale of the bond between mother and daughter.

Established in 2005, the Pew Center makes project grants in two areas, Performance and Exhibitions & Public Interpretation, while our twelve annual Fellowships provide unrestricted grants to individual artists working in all disciplines.
