The past year has been another great one for new plays in New Jersey - many of which were by New Jersey playwrights! This list is far from comprehensive but shows the great variety of new theatre being produced in our region.

As with so many theatres across the country (and the world), many of the New Jersey theatres had planned premiere productions that were either canceled or cut short—we look forward to hopefully seeing these premieres in an upcoming season.

Cape May Stage in Cape May produced the world premiere of Sidekicked by Kim Powers*, featuring Sally Mayes as Vivian Vance, who played Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy. The production played August 7, 2019 through September 20, 2019. It sold more tickets than any play in the theatre’s 30-year history.

Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre in Summit produced the world premiere of The Lucky Ones by LIA ROMEO* (September-October).

Growing Stage in Netcong produced the world premiere of Bunnyboy by PHILIP KAPLAN (February).

East Lynne Theater Company in Cape May produced the world premiere of Christmas with Harte and O. Henry adapted and performed by GAYLE STAHLHUTH (November-December).

George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick produced two world premieres, Midwives by Chris Bohjalian (January-February) and Conscience by JOE DIPIETRO (March).

Luna Stage in West Orange produced the world premiere of Mrs. Stern Wanders the Prussian State Library by JENNY LYN BADER (October-November).

McCarter Theater in Princeton produced the world premiere of Goodnight Nobody by Rachel Bonds (January-February).

New Jersey Rep produced three world premieres (including Voyager One by JARED MICHAEL DELANEY (June-July), Bone on Bone by MARYLOU DIPIETRO (January-February), and The Promotion by Joe Giovannetti (March).

Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn produced the world premiere of Unmasked: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, written with RICHARD CURTIS (January-March).

Premiere Stages at Kean University in Union included the world premiere of The Wake by TAMMY RYAN (July).

Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven produced the world professional premiere production of Boynton Beach Club with a book by SUSAN SEIDELMAN, music by NED GINSBURG, lyrics by MICHAEL COLBY* and CORNELIA RAVENAL (September).

Two River Theatre in Red Bank continued their collaboration with JOE ICONIS and produced the world premiere of the musical Love in Hate Nation (November-December).
