New York, NY Mint Theater Company will produce the world premiere of Becomes a Woman, an unpublished, never produced play by Dramatists Guild member Betty Smith (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn). Smith’s 1930 never-before-seen drama will run February 7-March 18 at NY City Center Stage II (131 West 55th Street, between 6th & 7th Avenues).

“I wasn’t surprised to learn that Betty Smith wrote a play. I was surprised to learn that Betty Smith was a playwright first and foremost,” said Jonathan Bank, Mint’s Producing Artistic Director. “She spent decades working in the theatre, with the Federal Theater Project and elsewhere. Becomes a Woman is not a novelty; it’s a beautifully crafted, utterly surprising story filled with vibrant characters, lively dialogue, and deep feeling. Most of our work over the years has been re-discovery, [and] I’m really pleased that Mint is able to produce the world premiere of this fine play. I hope it will bring new attention to an exceptionally talented American woman.”
