Mashuq Mushtaq Deen: Working with a Dramaturg
In your opinion, what is the role of a dramaturg?
The role of the dramaturg is to help the playwright by seeing the forest when sometimes the playwright can only see the trees. Sometimes it’s to place the play in context of the work that has come before, both the playwright’s and also the greater canon. The dramaturg can also help the creative team understand the play that’s in front of them.
Can you recall any specific positive experiences you’ve had with a dramaturg? What was established early in the working relationship that allowed this experience to be positive?
