Dramatists Guild member John Mabey has been announced as this year’s winner of the Getchell New Play Contest for his play A Complicated Hope. The contest, held by the Southeastern Theatre Conference and named after former SETC President Charles M. Getchell, includes a $1,000 award and an all-expense-paid trip to the annual SETC Convention. At the convention, Mabey will receive a staged reading of his winning play. He will also be considered for online publication and a feature in Southern Theatre magazine.
John Mabey’s plays and scholarly articles explore themes including sexual identity and spirituality across the lifespan. Other recent awards for full-length plays include the 2021 Panowski Playwriting Award. When not writing, John enjoys teaching and performing improvised comedy and true storytelling around the world.
