Full disclosure: as a playwright, I’ve never had the opportunity to work with a dramaturg. So, when The Dramatist Committee proposed a Dramaturgy Issue, I knew I had a lot to learn.

Perhaps my most important takeaway is that there’s no Platonic ideal of the Dramaturg. Every dramaturg works and thinks differently. Some stick to what is perhaps considered a more “traditional” role, assisting a playwright by providing research, often historical. Others, like Zachariah Ezer, who participates in our “Dramaturgs on Dramaturgy” roundtable on p. 20, aim to be “the first audience member for a play.”
