Spring in Maine is fickle. It shows up for a week in late February if you’re lucky, but everyone knows it won’t last. We call it False Spring or Fool’s Spring. Then, there’s an inevitable onslaught of snow, and it’s maple tapping season, and that week of warm weather feels like a distant memory.

We get a second False Spring in March, followed by another snowstorm. This often happens for a third time in April. If all goes well, the ground will start to thaw by Earth Day, and the first seeds of the season can be planted in the beginning of May.
