Darrel Alejandro Holnes Receives Inaugural Anthem Award
Text: The 1st Annual Anthem Awards

The Anthem Awards, a new initiative from the Webby Awards, have been established with the goal of celebrating purpose and mission-driven work from people, companies, and organizations worldwide. Awards will be given in seven categories: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion; Education, Art, & Culture; Health; Human & Civil Rights; Humanitarian Action & Services; Responsible Technology; and Sustainability, Environment, & Climate.

The team of Black Feminist Video Game, written by Dramatists Guild member Darrel Alejandro Holnes, received a Silver Award in Special Projects: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, for raising awareness about Black autism and countering negative and misrepresentation in entertainment media.

Black Feminist Video Game was originally developed in The Civilians R&D Group using the oral history of a Black autist and community-based art practices with the neurodiverse community. The project’s objective is to raise awareness of Black autism by countering representations of Black autists as violent, simple, or invisible in entertainment media.

Through several streamed live broadcasts, the students, cast, and crew of disabled and non-disabled emerging artists were able to engage thousands of unique viewers worldwide supported by 59E59 Theaters, Center Theatre Group, Williams Center at Lafayette College, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
