A Conversation with Paula Vogel
After many successful European performances and translations of the 1907 drama God of Vengance by Sholem Asch, the play was presented on Broadway in 1923. Six weeks into the run, the entire cast, producer, and one of the theatre owners were indicted and eventually convicted on charges of obscenity. Paula Vogel’s play about these events, Indecent, opened on Broadway, April 18, 2017. At the invitation of the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund, historian Tim McCarthy sat down to talk with Paula in front of an invited audience on June 9, 2017.
