The Guild was finally successful in obtaining the documentation and the following is a summary of the conflicting positions of the Copyright Office and the firm of the SSDC's attorney, Ron Shechtman, on behalf of director John Rando:

Carousel Theater, in a preemptive strike, began a suit in Akron that requests a declaratory judgment on behalf of itself and its creative team, naming the entire Broadway team as defendants. In Chicago, producer-director Tom Mullen also sued for a declaratory judgment, on behalf of his Urinetown team.

In the last two decades, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Soci­ety (SDC) has pushed for recognition of a separate copyright in stage direc­tions, presumably with the belief that a "director's copyright" would lead to more money and constrain some forms of plagiarism.

On the cusp of a new year, we look back at 1998 with pride and regret. While the Guild is proud of its accomplishments on behalf of its members, we regret that some of our actions were made necessary by circumstance and that circumstances continue to justify vigilance about certain important matters.
