In March 2020 a bunch of theaters* were producing plays, business as usual, when a global pandemic had other plans. Prioritizing the safety of their communities, they made difficult decisions to cease or postpone programming for the remainder of their seasons. But the story doesn’t end there. With a spirit of resilience, adaptation, and invitation, they came together to create the Play At Home project, a series of short plays commissioned specifically for this moment of unprecedented isolation to inspire joy and connection for all.

The Peale is a home for authentic Baltimore stories, based in the oldest museum building in the country, opened in 1814 by artist Rembrandt Peale. Iron Crow Theatre is Baltimore's queer theatre company. But what does that mean? It means amplifying the voice of LGBTQ+ actors and playwrights, yes, but it also means queer in the sense of pushing things beyond the limits of normal, producing visions that are off-kilter, that forces audiences to see in new ways, to ask new questions about what it means to watch a show.

The foundation of our company is “Pass It On.” During our tenure, we pass the baton of Lead Producing Playwright from artist-to-artist, giving each playwright the chance to navigate the company using their individual artistic vision. Each group of Welders produces one show by each member playwright then passes the company (from board to bank account) on to a new group of artists. Walking Shadow’s mission is to provide a virtual platform for playwrights to hear their in-development works read aloud. Playwrights receive interdisciplinary feedback from our company members to develop their work. We provide feedback from a panel of professionals in fields including writing, editing, playwriting, education, acting, directing, and technical theatre. We also have experts bringing perspectives from fields such as mental health, technology, and theology. We help new and experienced playwrights refine their works through performance and constructive feedback.

When we started, there was no template for creating theater over the internet, which turned out to be perfect because we could remove all the obstacles that held us back. At the time, we didn’t know what zoom was or how we could use it. Would people even know how to use it? How much would it cost? And what the heck is a virtual background? Each year five leading US-based artists are selected and provided funds to spend three to five months in Japan. This residency program allows artists to research and experience both the traditional and contemporary artistic milieu of Japan. Artists are free to live anywhere in the country to pursue activities of greatest relevance to their creative process.
