Theater artists in all parts of our industry are questioning with a renewed intensity not only the ways we write plays but how we teach playwriting. The murder of George Floyd, coupled with a global pandemic, the devastating effects of climate change, continuing environmental injustices again Indigenous peoples and landscapes, and growing nativist movements across the US revealed how theatre and theatre educational institutions are failing the demand for new approaches.

Since 1985, we’ve presented interactive comedy-mysteries for companies, theatres, and other groups. These were so successful and popular that we made our scripts available to theatres, schools, and other mystery-lovers. To date, over 1,500 groups around the world have used Moushey scripts and production packages to produce their own mysteries. We are a group of theater artists and companies joining forces during the pandemic to produce mail-based theatrical experiences. Many of us first met in the summer of 2020 in the Orchard Project’s international digital think-tank, the Liveness Lab. In March 2020 a bunch of theaters* were producing plays, business as usual, when a global pandemic had other plans. Prioritizing the safety of their communities, they made difficult decisions to cease or postpone programming for the remainder of their seasons. But the story doesn’t end there.
