Pepperdine's two-year MFA in Writing for Screen and Television prepares students to pursue vocations as screenwriters as well as to become cultural leaders in the entertainment industry. Hollywood professionals nurture, train, and support students in writing workshops and in courses that examine the storyteller in conversation with contemporary culture.

In partnership with three east-coast theaters, our graduating playwrights are developing their thesis plays through month-long online workshops, which will culminate in made-to-measure presentations. The playwrights get to build reltionships with their theater and with their director, in preparation for joining the field.

The LMU Writing for the Screen M.F.A. teaches you how to think like a screenwriter through a progression of rigorous classes, using long-form feature film writing as the springboard for crafting stories for a variety of screen sizes. Sunday Sprints is a guided writing session I teach over Zoom. It's weekly from 12pm to 2pm PST. Every fifteen minutes, I give a new writing prompt designed to get writers thinking more deeply about the characters in their work. We work with our microphones off (so people can listen to their own music, or write in silence if they prefer) and with our cameras on (so we can create a sense of community and accountability). At the end of class, writers are allowed to unmute themselves for an informal conversation to discuss how the prompts worked for them and if there's anything they're struggling...

The Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing (MFADW) is an intensive, intimate, mentor-based, practicing literary arts program for today’s dramatic writer. The MFADW, centrally housed in the School of Dramatic Arts at USC, an elite research university, is designed to mine the literary potential of the artist, and prepare the artist to engage meaningfully in global society and the profession. In association with the USC School of Cinematic Arts, specific cinematic writing courses are available in the MFADW.
