The Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA)'s multidisciplinary classes have trained playwrights, actors, and directors in all stages of their development and from all corners of the globe. The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is seeking applications from playwrights for the Harold Clurman Playwright-in-Residence program. This is a collaborative residency that is mutually beneficial to the mission of the studio and the playwright.

The Fordham/Primary Stages MFA in Playwriting program is a unique hybrid, offering emerging writers the opportunity to develop and produce their work in a rigorous Fordham setting, while simultaneously fostering professional relationships with Primary Stages, an award-winning Off-Broadway theatre company.

Under the direction of Tanya Barfield and David Lindsay-Abaire, the Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program offers tuition-free, graduate-level fellowships to four or five writers each year. Selected playwrights may be invited to continue their studies through a second academic year, thereby earning an Artist Diploma in Playwriting. The cohort is purposely small. Fellows concentrate on the practical aspects of dramatic writing through a weekly master class with the program's directors. The Rita and Burton Goldberg MFA in Playwriting is an affordable, selective two-year program that fuses rigorous academic theatre classes with hands-on writing workshops. Our distinguished writing faculty - Master Artists in Residence Annie Baker and Brandon Jacob-Jenkins, plus distinguished Lecturer Brighde Mullins - work with a small cohort of students to develop their voice, vision, and craft under the personal mentorship of these accomplished writers.

The MFA in Playwriting prepares a select group of students for professional careers as dramatic writers and collaborative artists in theater, film, and television. The program offers a complete and relevant playwriting education with rigorous attention to craft and artistic exploration as well as consistent opportunities to develop those skills through presentations and productions.

The New School prepares students to understand, contribute to, and succeed in a rapidly changing society, thus making the world a better and more just place. We will ensure that our students develop both the skills that a sound education provides and the competencies essential for success and leadership in the emerging creative economy. We will also lead in generating practical and theoretical knowledge that enables people to better understand our world and improve conditions for local and global communities.

When the School of the Arts was founded at NYU in 1965, it was heralded as a daring adventure — to be a school unlike any other. We met that challenge, and what has emerged over the last 50 years is the country’s preeminent center for the study of the performing, cinematic and emerging media arts.

The Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program isn’t just a master’s degree; it’s a community of collaborators engaged in the ever-evolving process of creating new musical theatre. Students and faculty include composers, lyricists, and bookwriters — the people who put their individual talents together to write works for the musical stage. Each year, 30 full-time students embark on a two-year course, participating in ongoing writing workshops that emphasize craft, the art of collaboration, rewriting, storytelling, and developing an original voice.
