Delta Center Stage was founded in 1979 by a group of volunteers to bring live theatre back to the Delta Community. Rising from the ashes of Greenville/Leland's "Twin City Theatre Guild" which had folded seven years earlier, Delta Center Stage since its founding has produced a subscription season of plays continuously for 40 years. Until 2002 DCS functioned entirely through the contributions of volunteers from every walk of life. On June 1 of 2002, after 23 years as a volunteer organization, Delta Center Stage hired its first full time employee, Executive Director Tim Bixler.

Maya Angelou said during an interview, “We have some impulse to explain who we are... There’s something, which impels us to show our inner-souls.” Hattiloo presents plays that fulfill this human need by revealing the ‘inner-soul’ of the Black community. Our plays are for some people a means of self-examination; and for others they are eye-openers.

Playhouse on the Square is Memphis’ only professional resident theatre. While creating resources for theatre artists, we also want to stage plays by local playwrights, create opportunities for teaching artists through our residencies, and help artists on their way to national prominence
