The MFA in Playwriting prepares a select group of students for professional careers as dramatic writers and collaborative artists in theater, film, and television. The program offers a complete and relevant playwriting education with rigorous attention to craft and artistic exploration as well as consistent opportunities to develop those skills through presentations and productions.

The Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing cross-trains students in all areas of dramatic writing with concentrations in Film, Playwriting, and Television.

The Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program isn’t just a master’s degree; it’s a community of collaborators engaged in the ever-evolving process of creating new musical theatre. Students and faculty include composers, lyricists, and bookwriters — the people who put their individual talents together to write works for the musical stage. Each year, 30 full-time students embark on a two-year course, participating in ongoing writing workshops that emphasize craft, the art of collaboration, rewriting, storytelling, and developing an original voice.

The New School prepares students to understand, contribute to, and succeed in a rapidly changing society, thus making the world a better and more just place. We will ensure that our students develop both the skills that a sound education provides and the competencies essential for success and leadership in the emerging creative economy. We will also lead in generating practical and theoretical knowledge that enables people to better understand our world and improve conditions for local and global communities.

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is seeking applications from playwrights for the Harold Clurman Playwright-in-Residence program. This is a collaborative residency that is mutually beneficial to the mission of the studio and the playwright.

The Echoes Writers Group at Primary Stages is a year-long, educational program focused on finding, nurturing, and amplifying the voices of women, non-binary, and gender non-conforming artists. Led by the artistic team at Primary Stages, Echoes is a place for writers to discover and develop their voice in a supportive and creative community that grows together. Theatre Producers of Color (TPOC) is a multifaceted collective of theatremakers joined together in support of the next generation of BIPOC producers by providing access to education, training, and mentorship. We are supported and incubated by Broadway For All (BFA), a national organization shaping the next generation of advocates for radical inclusivity and anti-racism through engagement with the performing arts.
