“i found god in myself, and i loved her, i loved her fiercely”

Those are the words of Ntozake Shange, who at 27 years old penned the Broadway hit for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf. It was a glorious choreo-poem that gave voice to a generation of young Black women’s desires, joys and frustrations. It was the first time many of us saw our truth presented in full and vibrant color on the American stage.
