This presentation will offer basic educational insights from GLAAD about the transgender and nonbinary community including common terms, their definitions, a discussion on what it means to be trans, and the impact that stereotypes in media and theatre can have in real-world lives and scenarios.
This will be followed by a look at the ways in which the current canon of Broadway plays and musicals have portrayed (or failed to portray) trans and nonbinary characters onstage, as well as suggestions for how writers can authentically portray and cast trans and nonbinary characters in new work.
This presentation will be provided by Dana Aliya Levinson (she/they), Associate Director of Transgender Representation at GLAAD, and Nick Adams, Vice President of the GLAADMedia Institute.
