It's tax season! We know that taxes can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially for freelancers like writers. Elaine Grogan Luttrull (founder of Minerva Financial Arts) will lead two free, online tax workshops, one for early career theatre writers and one for mid-career/established writers. Wherever you are in your career, you'll be empowered with the knowledge to plan, prepare, and file your taxes!

Taxes for Early Career Writers

Discover the overall tax landscape for theatre writers! In this workshop, you'll learn which records you should retain for tax purposes, and explore common deductions for writers – including when someone qualifies to claim for business deductions.

As part of this workshop, we will: 

  • Review the overall income tax landscape for common federal and state filings;
  • Identify records to retain for tax purposes and effective systems for tracking expenses and income;
  • Define ordinary and necessary business deductions common to early-career writers. 

This workshop is for you if: 

  • You are early in your writing career, and you have a ton of questions;
  • You want to boost your tax habits, including preparing for taxes and keeping good records;
  • You’d like to understand what expenses are deductible;
  • You want to learn from the questions that others ask.

Discovering common tax scenarios faced by writers is essential for navigating the intricate landscape of tax deductions. As a writer, you may encounter various tax situations that impact your income and expenses. Understanding how deductions work can help you maximize your tax savings and ensure compliance with the tax laws.

In this workshop, we will:

  • Identify ordinary and necessary deductions that are common for established creative individuals; 
  • Review the tax implications of S Corporations (and when they make sense);
  • Highlight key tax planning options to maximize throughout the year.

This workshop is for you if: 

  • You’ve been writing for a while, and you’ve learned some things about taxes along the way;
  • You’d like clarity on what is deductible, but you generally have a pretty good idea;
  • You are wondering if it is time to switch to an S Corporation;
  • You are curious about tax planning strategies;
  • You have some specific questions to ask.
