The Dramatists Guild stands in staunch support of the authors, Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry, and the cast, crew, and production of Parade, which has been targeted by neo-Nazi hate groups protesting outside the Jacobs Theatre. The presence of these groups at the theatre shines a light on how urgent and trenchant the revival of this seminal show is and provides further evidence of the horrifying rise of antisemitism in our country.
While the Guild supports the right of free speech, the mayor is permitted by law to enforce reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions to ensure that the rights of protesters do not infringe on the rights of audiences and workers to attend the theatre safely, without being threatened, insulted, bullied or intimidated. We have already co-signed a statement with our partners in the Coalition of Broadway Unions & Guilds (“COBUG”) to denounce the activities of these protesters but now reiterate our demand that Mayor Adams do his duty and take all measures within his authority to protect those attending and working on the show… and we urge him to do so IMMEDIATELY, before another tragedy occurs on the streets of New York.
