Everyone's a Playwright: Writing as a Teaching Tool and Expressive Engine with Caleen Sinnette Jennings and David Henry Hwang
Body

The Dramatists Guild Foundation, in partnership with the American Alliance for Theatre and Education, will be presenting a symposium on playwriting on Saturday, February 6 and Sunday, February 7. The focus of this event will be on the importance of playwriting at all ages. Participating writers and educators will feature DG members Gab Cody and Teresa Coleman Wash. The symposium's keynote speakers will include DG Council Member David Henry Hwang and Dramatists Guild Institute Faculty member Callen Sinnette Jennings.

The craft of writing can be isolating and also challenging, now more so than ever. When writers are brought together to hone their skills, we all remember the crucial impact these artists have in keeping the American theater alive and vibrant. This symposium is based on two years of work with the AATE Playwright’s Network; programming will explore how to draw attention to the importance of writing in the scope of theater and education.

Sessions will focus on:

  • Fostering emotional wellness through playwriting

  • Virtual learning

  • Playwriting, trauma, and social justice

  • Student voices and authentic storytelling

  • Sample playwriting exercises and lessons
