On Friday, the Dramatists Guild co-signed and supported the Authors Guild in an amicus brief for Hachette v. Internet Archive, supporting the publishers in their fight against Internet Archive's unauthorized uploading and sharing of books (which may include published plays and musicals) via their Open Library platform.

As put forth in the online statement made by the Authors Guild, the Internet Archive's use of these materials is copyright infringement and it is not covered by the fair use doctrine. Furthermore, as noted in the amicus brief, the practice of scanning and distributing free copies of books severely hinders an author's ability to earn income from their original, copyrighted work. The brief goes on to warn that enabling Internet Archive could result in devastating financial consequences for authors (including dramatists) and for related markets, including ebook publishing.
