Thelma de Castro

Playwright

Thelma Virata de Castro is a San Diego Dramatists Guild Ambassador, Hedgebrook alumna, and founder of San Diego Playwrights.  She received a Creative Catalyst Fellowship from The San Diego Foundation with Asian Story Theater (AST), and California Humanities grants with AST and Access Inc. She worked with AST and AARP to create Hand Under Hand, a play with music by Emily Rutherford about caregiving in the Asian Pacific Islander community. She is a Teaching Artist with Playwrights Project in their Out of the Yard program for Arts in Corrections. Her short play "Pussycats" was part of Celebrating Community Voices in the 2020 Powers New Voices Festival at The Old Globe Theatre.
