Matt Werner is a playwright from Oakland, California. His Off-Broadway debut was in 2018 for Agnus, a crime drama he cowrote with Ise Lyfe, which debuted at Theatre Row. He also wrote new work in the BARS Workshop led by Daveed Diggs at The Public Theater in 2016. Most recently, a workshop of his musical comedy Burning Man: The Musical was presented at Z Space in San Francisco in December, 2019.
Matt works as a Senior Technical Writer for Google, managing Google’s communications for its video conferencing technology during COVID-19. He’s also been the lead writer at Google on other notable products including Google Docs & Google Drive, the Chrome web browser, and the Android phone. Over the past decade, his writing for Google has been translated into 40 languages and quoted in dozens of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, and read by hundreds of millions of people globally.
Prior to Google, Matt worked more jobs than he can count, including, as a poetry translator, freelance journalist, fact checker for McSweeney’s, radio DJ, salad and dessert chef, and as a painting contractor. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley (BA in English, Phi Beta Kappa) and the University of Edinburgh (Masters in English, Winston Churchill Scholar).
