Kathleen Culebro is a Mexican-born playwright and community builder whose work brings humor, heart, and cultural connection to the stage. Drawing on her bicultural perspective, she creates plays that explore identity, family, and resilience. Her plays have been produced across the United States and abroad, leading The New York Times to describe her as “clearly a writer of promise.” Recent commissions include Still No Exit for Bishop Arts Theatre Center in Dallas, and her plays have been produced as far-reaching as Australia. Her produced works include A Leopard Complains of Its Spots; La Llorona, A Love Story; Smart Pretty Funny; and The Amazing, Fabulous, and Spectacular Untruths of Juan Garcia—a semifinalist for the 2024 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference. Her newest play, Dolores, Who Now Knows Everything, has been developed at the Sin Muros Festival at Stages Theatre in Houston and at Broad Horizons Theatre Company in New York City. 
 

From 2000 to 2025, Culebro was the Founding Artistic Director of Amphibian Stage in Fort Worth, a nationally recognized theatre company where she produced nearly 100 plays over 25 years. Under her leadership, the company launched world premieres that traveled nationwide, created innovative community-centered programs, and was honored with the American Theatre Wing’s National Theatre Company Award. After stepping away from Amphibian Stage in 2025, she has returned her full focus to her own playwriting.
 

Her contributions as both playwright and artistic leader have been recognized with numerous honors, including Arts Fort Worth’s 2025 Trailblazer Award, the 2020 Kline-Watts Award for Cultural Contribution from Near Southside Inc., and a 2019 Special Citation for Support of the Veteran Community.
