Jon Spano

Playwright
he/him/his

Former dancer-turned-playwright, Mr. Spano's current works in development and production are the plays DENNIS (concerning the now middle-aged survivors of the AIDS epidemic who now face their own mortality); SECOND SON (focusing on how current political and social climates destroy families and repress expressions of love); SEBASTIAN (which explores the heroic journey of the off-stage character Sebastian Venable in a prequel to SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER), and the screenplay MUSKEGO LAKE (the tale of a woman who's run out of schemes and places to run, based on his play).  Jon's dance play JOEY VARIATIONS (semi-finalist at both Lark Play Development Center and the O’Neill Playwrights Conference) was an award-winning hit at the 2016 New York Fringe Festival.  His short plays THE SWEAT, RIPPLE EFFECT, and 8th WONDER have been winners and finalists at several festivals. Many of his plays have been published by Smith & Kraus. Other recent one-acts developed for Uraban Artists Collective include JUMPSTART, BEST ADVICE EVER, and FOLIE A TROIS.  At the end of his dance career, Mr. Spano studied acting with William Alderson and Sanford Meisner and has - as per his bucket list - returned to acting with leading and supporting roles in several short films. He recently had main roles in two productions of GOLDEN BOY, playing "Tokio," the trainer and "Eddie Fuseli," the mobster. Jon is a graduate of NYU, takes ballet class at Alvin Ailey, and practices Bikram yoga and TM. An animal rights advocate, Jon is also a member of Best Friends Animal Shelter and loves to cook Italian cuisine.
