Jonathan Hogue

Librettist Playwright Lyricist

Jonathan Hogue is a freelance playwright, director, and producer, and enjoys catching (and forming a strong opinion on) every show currently playing on and off-Broadway. His original musical "Stranger Sings!" - a parody of the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things" - is aiming for an off-Broadway run in the 2020-2021 season, and he has a few other written projects currently in development.

Always seeking to challenge his perspective, Jonathan tells stories that wrestle with challenging issues, unpacking cultural polarities (especially with satire) in hopes to inspire dialogue with audiences of all ages. His musical writing demonstrates a deeply rooted appreciation for musical comedy, reflected best in "Stranger Sings!" in his music and lyrics as well as his book (view links below for samples of his work). Jonathan's writing also extends to introspective thought pieces on faith, service, and global issues, as evidenced by the 60+ op-ed pieces he wrote while serving across 12 countries as an International Aid Worker with the World Race (August 2016-August 2017 - visit jonathanhogue.theworldrace.org for past written pieces). His directorial work demonstrates his ability to find honesty and truth within a variety of theatrical styles, from broad satire with "I Was There For You: A 'Friends' Parody Musical" (which ran two sold-out performances at 54 Below in 2017) to nuanced historical drama with "When Harry Met Nancy" (a New York New Works Festival 2017 Semi-Finalist). He also has a passion for developing new works, and has been actively working with Broadway's Christopher Smith ("Amazing Grace") on a few upcoming productions. As a member of the Hunter Arnold's Underrepresented Producers Initiative, Jonathan is also pursuing opportunities as a theatrical producer, gleaning insight from successful Broadway producers with the goal of producing full-time on Broadway within the next five years.

Jonathan is deeply passionate about the unique opportunity theatre has to be a voice in our culture, through which he seeks to create powerful theatre that can bring lasting change to our broken but beautiful world.
