Cynthia Wands

Playwright

I worked as a stage actress in San Francisco, Boston and Los Angeles, and loved the magic in collaborative performances. I trained at the Drama Studio in Berkeley and was involved in world premieres with the Magic Theatre, San Francisco Rep Theatre, and the Celebration Theatre.

My work explores the mystic and historic elements of our consciousness.

My full length play “CHANGE FOR MARTHA WASHINGTON”, about an afterlife trial for Martha Washington as she tries to negotiate her way to heaven, has just finished workshop development.

In my play “THE HOARDING HOUSE”, I examine the gluttony of hoarding, the molecular memory of slavery in our present history and the permission to grow beyond one’s legacy.

My full length play “THE LOST YEARS”, centered on the backstage life of women during Shakespeare’s time, had it’s premier at the Contra Costa Civic Theatre in 2017, under the direction of Marilyn Langbehn.

My full length play “THE LOST AND FOUND OF 2020”, about a magical tarot reader who helps people search for their lost identity in 2020, is in development with Lee Wochner’s workshop WORDS THAT SPEAK.

My scene in “ALICE IN QUARANTINE”, part of a collaborative script where eleven playwrights have teamed up to write a peculiar pandemic-proof play: ALICE IN QUARANTINE: A Drive-Thru Adventure. This exciting outdoor theatre event was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This script has been produced and is now published and available at

I’ve studied writing with Dakota Powell and Leon Martell at UCLA, Murray Mednick, Jack Grapes, Jennie Webb, Lee Wochner in his “Words That Speak” workshops, and the Seedlings Dramaturg Workshop with the Theatricum Botanicum. I’ve been involved in the reading and development of new scripts with the Dramatist Guild of America, Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative (LAFPI), the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights, and the International Centre for Female Playwrights. I am a featured blogger on the LAFPI “Women of Interest” blog.
