Charles Gershman

Playwright Librettist

Charles Gershman is a Midwest-bred queer playwright/screenwriter, a 2018-2019 Dramatists Guild Foundation Playwriting Fellow, a 2019 Chesley/Bumbalo Playwriting Award winner, and a 2019 Relentless Award Semifinalist. Through the DGF Fellows Program he is developing a play called Stopover, about a modern family and their foster teen, with mentorship from Diana Son. Other plays include Quik-Mart (NYU-Tisch Chair’s Award), The Waiting Game (59E59 Theaters, 2019), and Free & Proud (London’s Theatre503, Assembly Festival / Edinburgh Fringe, ‘One of 10 queer shows to see in town’ – London Evening Standard). His plays are published by Oberon Books. His work has been supported or developed by The Lark, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, the Dramatists Guild Foundation, Theatre503, PlayPenn, The Playwrights’ Center, the Kennedy Center, LaMaMa ETC, 59E59 Theaters, Primary Stages, NYU-Tisch School of the Arts, Dixon Place, and the New Ohio, among others. He has been a teaching artist at The New School’s Eugene Lang College and at Davidson College. He earned an MFA in dramatic writing in 2018 at NYU-Tisch and a BA in history at Columbia University. He is currently also a LABA Fellow at the 14th Street Y.
