Bridgette A. Wimberly
Ms. Wimberly, whose first play Saint Lucy’s Eyes was produced at WP Theater in 2001, was hailed by the New York Times as “one of the country’s most powerful chroniclers of the Black underclass.” After its initial production, the show was developed through the Cherry Lane Alternative Mentorship Project with Wendy Wasserstein and received an eight-week run at the Cherry Lane Theater. She would later go on to serve on the Cherry Lane Board of Directors for ten years.
In 2014, Ms. Wimberly wrote the libretto to Charlie Parker’s Yardbird, a collaboration with saxophonist and composer Daniel Schnyder. The opera received its world premiere in 2015 at Opera Philadelphia, produced in association with Gotham Chamber Opera.
In addition to her work with WP Theater, Cherry Lane, and Opera Philadelphia, Ms. Wimberly received commissions, workshops, and/or productions from Alliance Theatre, Arena Stage, Castillo Theatre, Cleveland Play House, Here/Tiny Mythic Theatre, Karamu Theatre, Kuntu Repertory Theatre, Manhattan Theater Club, St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, and Ensemble Studio Theatre, where she recently became a lifetime member.
