NEW ENGLAND WEST ONLINE: Plasticity in Your Play

May 26 2020 / 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM

Kato McNickle was exposed to the concept of plasticity when she studied with Paula Vogel. She will discuss what plasticity is and how to create plasticity in your play-world in this participatory workshop.

Plasticity of the play-world is the theatrical mechanisms. It is the bones that support the shape. The speech is the breath. Starting with the bones before the breath will save you time, increase the urgency, and guide you through the arc of your story to keep you on track.

The workshop will include writing exercises, with group breakout sessions in Zoom.

Kato McNickle is a Connecticut-based playwright, director, and artist. A graduate of Brown University, they hold a degree in Ancient Studies specializing in Greco-Roman and Sanskrit performance and continue to study the connection between art, perception, neuroscience, and theater. Inspired after working with Paula Vogel, Kato is on a mission to explore stage plasticity and the aliveness of theatrical performance. They have taught playwriting at the University of Connecticut, and writing and comic making at Artreach, Inc. in Norwich, CT. They are chair of the New London Artistic Council; Vice-President of the Mystic Paper Beasts Mask & Puppetry Company; producer of the Mayfly 24-Hour Theater in New London, and a member Dramatist Guild and the Star Wars Fan Club.
