The Business Affairs team presents Attorneys Backstage! Each month, Director of Business Affairs Jessica Lit, Esq. and Business Affairs Consultant Leesa Fenderson, Esq. will “pull back the curtain” on various aspects of the business of writing for the theatre.

This month the attorneys will “pull back the curtain” on subsidiary rights. The concept of subsidiary rights is so paramount for dramatists that it is number 3 in the DG Bill of Rights. Despite this term being tossed around frequently in negotiations, many people still do not know exactly what it means. 

In this session, the attorneys will define what subsidiary rights actually are, but also go over the recommended conditions a producer must meet to vest in a portion of the author’s subsidiary rights; what the standard terms are for a grant of subsidiary rights in any given market; and how to read and spot red flags in the subsidiary rights provisions in your contracts.
