Attorneys Backstage: Pulling Back the Curtain on Non-Authorial Collaborators

It’s not too late to join The Business Affairs team for its monthly series: Attorneys Backstage! Each month, Director of Business Affairs Jessica Lit, Esq. and Business Affairs Consultant Leesa Fenderson, Esq. will “pull back the curtain” on various aspects of the business of writing for the theatre.

This month the attorneys will “pull back the curtain” on non-authorial collaborators. Theatre is inherently collaborative. For a production to happen, you not only need the words on the page, but actors to speak them, designers to capture the mood, a director to bring the vision to life, and more! While all of these artistic personnel are your collaborators in making the production
come to life (i.e., non-authorial collaborators), they are not your collaborators in making the play or musical come to life (i.e., authorial collaborators); but we also know that sometimes those lines can get blurred. 

In this session we will discuss how to distinguish between an authorial and non-authorial collaborator as well as how to navigate your relationships with non-authorial collaborators. We will also take a peek at some of the Guild’s Devised Theatre resources and discuss the role of the author in the devising process. We’ll see you backstage!
