We're more than halfway through our End of Play.™ challenge, and it's been quite an invigorating journey for our participating writers so far!
Thanks to everyone who filled out the accomplishment form, we can share that more than 6,700 pages have been written. But, of course, the writing process is about much more than just the page count. It's about personal victories and resilience and discovery. Everybody's process is different, of course. 284 dramatists (14% of reported total) have spent some time focusing on character development in their play, song, or musical. 203 dramatists (9% of reported total) have used End of Play.™ as an opportunity to do some research for their project. And 134 dramatists (6% of reported total) have emphasized structure, taking time to outline their work before or while they write.
It can feel frustrating to be midway through a messy first (or second or third or even tenth!) draft, but don't lose sight of the forest for the trees! Even if you didn't meet all of your personal daily goals, you're still showing up. You're still writing. And that's commendable. As one End of Play.™ participant put it, "I am honoring that this play will take time. A first draft is visceral and that is the beauty of it."

What is End of Play.™?
End of Play.™ is an annual initiative, created by the Dramatists Guild, to incentivize the completion of new plays, scores or songs over the period of one month. Starting with a successful launch in 2020, hundreds of participating dramatic writers across the world connected with one another to overcome obstacles that stand in the way of writing the first draft of new plays.
Each year, writers set goals for themselves at the beginning of End of Play.TM Month and post weekly updates about how they are doing to the community. Goals may include writing a new full-length play/musical, two one-act plays/musicals, or completing a second draft of any of the above. Ultimately, the goal of End of Play.TM is to get writers to the finish line through motivation and community.
