Devised Theatre Contracts

In March, the Devised Theatre Committee and Business Affairs Department presented Guild members with four contract models for devised theater as well as the Devised Theatre Resource Manual. These materials are the first of their kind and were created in response to a need expressed by Guild members. (Online, see http://bit.ly/DevisedTheatre)

The Guild materials were not created to limit the collaborative spirit found in devised theatre. The sharing of ideas, thoughts, and suggestions among multiple individuals is invaluable. Rather, they were created to assist authors engaged in a devised or collaborative process to form appropriate relationships with co-authors, devisors, and sponsoring theaters. Ultimately, it is the author’s responsibility to preserve authorial ownership and control when creating work of this type – rights that have been established under law and preserved in the theater industry for a century or more.

The Guild acknowledges that each devising process is unique. Accordingly, we prepared several contract models:

• Collaboration Agreement Solely Between Writers

• Collaboration Agreement Be-tween Writers And Non-Writers

• Preliminary Agreement to Participate (where collaborators’ roles have not been finalized)

• Production Agreement (between authors and a producer)

You should use the model(s) that best meet the needs of your particular situation. In some cases, more than one model may be needed. In order to assist members in selecting a contract, we included the following Collaboration Agreement Selection Chart (see next page) in our Devised Theatre Manual.

This is just one of the several resources now at your disposal. As always, members should feel free to contact Business Affairs with any questions. We are here to help!
