1. What is The Dramatist?
The Dramatist is the bimonthly magazine of the Dramatists Guild. It is available on newsstands, by subscription, or sent automatically as one of the privileges of Guild membership. It includes articles on the creators and creative process of theater, including interviews, symposia and conversations bewteen stage professionals, essays of personal experience and instructional pieces on craft.
Return to Top2. What is The Quarterly?When the Guild changed the format of its magazine in 1998, from a quarterly journal to a bimonthly publication, we also changed its name from The Quarterly to The Dramatist.
Return to Top3. What is Guildworks?Guildworks is a supplement to The Dramatist available only to Guild members, sent automatically as one of the privileges of Guild membership. It includes regional reports, business advice, the latest information on submission and career development opportunities and reminders of approaching deadlines.

4. What is The Resource Directory?The Resource Directory is an annual sourcebook available only to Guild members, sent automatically as one of the privileges of Guild membership. It includes lists of conferences and festivals, contests, producers, publishers, agents and attorneys, fellowships and grants and workshops throughout the U.S. and the world.
Return to Top5. How can I buy your publications?Guildworks and Resource Directory are only for Guild members, but anyone may buy The Dramatist, which is distributed to bookstores nationwide. If your local store doesn’t carry it, you can either become a subscriber or order a single current or back issue, subject to availability.
Return to Top6. How can I subscribe?If you’re a member of the Dramatists Guild, a subscription to all its publications is included in your annual dues. If you’re a playwright, composer or lyricist but not a member yet, you should visit our membership page. If you’re a theater professional or enthusiast, you can subscribe.
Return to Top7. How can I advertise?We run display ads in The Dramatist and classifieds in Guildworks. Deadlines (for copy and payment) are the second Mon. in Sep. (Nov/Dec issue), Nov. (Jan/Feb), Jan. (Mar/Apr), Mar. (May/Jun), May (Jul/Aug), and July (Sep/Oct). Ads in three consecutive issues get a 10% discount, those in six consecutive issues 20%. We won’t run ads without payment in advance by check or money order.
We offer three display ad sizes: full-pg (8-1/2”x11”), half-pg (8-1/2”x5-1/2” horizontal; 4-1/4”x11” vertical); quarter-pg (4-1/4”x5-1/2”). Allow 1/8” margin on all sides for trim. We also offer full-pg ads in black-and-white or 4-color – and premium inside- or back-cover placement. All art should be 300 dpi TIFF or EPS files. Rates are: $1,000 for 4-color back cover; $850 for 4-color inside cover; $675 for 4-color full-pg; $500 for black-and-white full-pg; $325 for half-pg; $225 for quarter-pg. All rates reflect net value.
We may edit classifieds for style or content and won’t accept any we deem substandard, inappropriate, or below basic artistic or financial standards. All groups must provide background/contact info and disclose all fees (application, reading, enrollment, etc.) and costs (room/board, travel, tuition, etc.). Nonprofit theaters and Guild members get one free listing each year. Nonprofit schools, commercial groups, nonmembers, and any listing in more than one issue in a year is $40 for the first 40 words plus 75¢ for each additional word.

Return to Top8. How can I submit an article?We accept unsolicited submissions only for The Dramatist. The response time is up to six months. For feature articles, we pay about 10¢ per published word, (not to exceed $200). We ask for nonexclusive license to publish the article, reprint it in future issues or compendia, and post it on our website for the duration of the copyright. Authors retain all other rights to their work.
Our mission is to serve the members of the Dramatists Guild and to educate the public about the creators and creation of theater, so we want articles that appeal to both professionals and laymen. We don’t want footnoted dissertations, PR pieces, legal advice, or scripts. Beyond that, we assume any quotes are correctly attributed, facts accurately represented, and permissions appropriately acquired.
Return to Top9. Can I reprint an article?The response time for permission requests is up to four weeks. Only nonexclusive rights are granted. All responses are faxed or, if no fax number is provided, mailed. To process your request for permission to reprint from The Dramatist, please submit the following information:
Requester’s name/title, organization (specify commercial or nonprofit), address, phone/fax, email;
Requested article, author, issue date, pages, extent used (specify in full or submit edit);
Requested rights (language, territory, format), purpose (specify title, if any), publisher, price, print run.
