FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTLIGHTS

One of the Guild's many member benefits is the opportunity to present a reading of a play or musical in a space provided by the Guild on a certain date and time. The Friday Night Footlight Series allows members to do just that, free of charge. With scattered dates throughout the fall and spring, each series showcases the work of many writers per night. Currently, the Friday Night Footlights series takes place in New York (in the heart of Times Square), Los Angeles, and Phoenix, with more cities in development.

TIERRA (LAND/EARTH)
by Alfonso Ramirez

This historical play, inspired by a Diego Rivera mural called "La Maestra Rural," is set in the 1920s directly after the conclusion of the Mexican Revolution.  A young, innocent and idealistic teacher is sent into the interior of Mexico by the newly-installed government to educate the peasants and help them re-possess the lands promised to them by government reforms.  While the peasants embrace her wholeheartedly, she encounters opposition to her altruistic work by a rich landowner who not only feels threatened by the teacher illuminating the peasants of their rights, but also frustrated by his inability to woo her.  His anger and resentment are further fueled when he finds himself competing with one of his own workers for the teacher's affections, followed by the boycotts on the part of his workers.
